Authorized in 1923, this distinctive shield insignia was originally designated to represent the "Coast Defenses of Sandy Hook." By WWII, it was redesignated the "Harbor Defenses of New York and Sandy Hook." This insignia signified that soldiers wearing it were serving in a unit assigned to defend New York Harbor.
